Unlocking Greatness: Academic Success Under Construction
Welcome Back to MEXIA ISD 2014-15 School Year!
Dear Faculty, Staff, Parents, Students and All Supporters:
Time flies when you are working hard! We began our journey last year by making sure we were traveling on our educational bus, moving from good to GREAT, getting in the right seat on the bus and laying a lot of foundational work for this new school year. For the 2014-15 school year, we must continue the journey. The vision, although complex is simply to create a premier district! It sounds like a small task but is very complex with many layers and pillars to construct in every aspect of education in our district. As we make this continued journey together, I ask that all of you put on your hard hats, get those tool belts out and tie them tightly so your tools don’t fall by the wayside. Let’s get our districtwide construction team of all stakeholders moving in the right direction, using the right tools and end the year with every campus meeting standards with all distinctions. That takes the work of everyone and that includes you! There is greatness in our students and our quest will be to expand their potential. Our entire team at MISD understands the mission and has been equipped to educate all students in an enriched environment where high expectations result in excellence. Wait, there’s more…
What You Can Expect:
- Each and every parent/guardian to have received a positive parent phone call by the end of the 1st week of school
- Improved communication from all MISD campuses, departments and teachers
- Student-Led parent conferences each six weeks
- SAT Vocabulary challenges at every campus PreK-12
- Improved College, Career and Workforce emphasis on all campuses
- More Community Forums to engage all supporters and provide information on a regular basis about our school business, giving you an inside view
- A greater commitment to improve concerns and ratings in all academic areas of accountability
My administrative team and I are dedicated and committed to communicate and celebrate excellence along the journey. Thank you in advance for joining us in making our vision and mission become reality and not just words, phrases or mere rhetoric on the wall. We can do it! I’ve looked beyond the classroom doors and beyond the improvement plans to see the vision as reality. If you look and imagine, you will see it too! We cannot do it alone. My grandmother and great-grandmother taught me the alphabet, their sounds, words and how to read (a little) and write before I went to kindergarten. They gave me a head start in life. While in school, if I came home without homework, my grandmother gave me a book and told me to read something from it. She wanted to hear me read! I am challenging all caregivers, parents, grandparents and guardians to do it the “old school” way. It worked for us and it can work for our youth today. Provide them with books to read at night. Place education as Priority 1 - over everything else that takes up their time, except religious beliefs and time in church. But you get the picture! I am very competitive so I make my next point IN LOVE and with much sincerity. In athletics, the BLACKCATS compete with a lot of great teams but they are taught to get out on the field or court and have fun while they win! In the mind of every Blackcat lies the thought: If we work hard enough, we could win a STATE Championship! Guess what, in the classroom, we will teach with the same mentality! Two-a-days, practice, practice, practice, team mottos, work with the end in mind….and so forth. It is possible to have all distinctions at every campus when we get our testing results from TEA after taking our state exams! Know that now, believe it and know that we can achieve it!
Together, let’s build an exceptional school of excellence that will allow our children to fly…because they can!
Construct and build in this sense doesn’t really mean the building and facility
projects although we need to attend to those needs as well. In this context, we are constructing and building a better educational system for our students.
On behalf of the MISD Board of Trustees, Administrators, Faculty, Staff, Parents and Students, I welcome each of you to Mexia ISD in the heart of Mexia, Texas! This really is a GREAT place to be! If you are a citizen or just passing through the area, please stop by to visit and pick up a brochure about our services. For a glimpse back into the past, call ahead to schedule a time in which you can visit our school museum located upstairs at the Mexia ISD Administration building.
Our schools exist to provide a quality education to the children we serve; therefore, we will improve all areas of instruction to make this a reality for all concerned. As your Superintendent, I make the following pledge:
· To be positive, optimistic, visible, motivating
· To listen thoughtfully and deliberately
· To learn the culture and acknowledge the successful established norms
· To communicate effectively to all stakeholders
· To establish trust and remain confidential
· To provide effective leadership and feedback that leads to improved academic achievement
School change and improvement are continuous processes. As we move forward, there will be a presence of evaluating, revising, reflecting, problem-solving, and new learning for all. I invite you to be one who takes part in creating a positive educational experience which leads to the success of our children!
Our school leaders have been trained to conduct effective data walks and will be in every classroom every week. We are planning to be a premier district by design and not by accident. It is a journey and we are equipping each employee to create an enriched environment where high expectations result in excellence. We wish to thank Learning Keys and our two Tammy's for the hard work they put in while in our district. To change the culture, we acknowledge that change must take place in the mind of each adult. If you visit our classrooms you will see that our objectives are visible and written in student friendly language. You will also see other changes and improvements as the year progresses.
Defender of the Crimson and Black,
Dr. Sharon Ross
